Major project | Camera-less photography

Updated: Dec 1, 2020

Artist Statement

The work reflects the life of Yuki including his cat behavior, body language, and our close emotional relationship. As well as Yuki being my model I also used and arranged his clothing, food and toys. More interestingly, I combined the two methods with the same objects of Yuki in one photography, it allows the audience to appreciate the different beauty of these processes. My everyday life involves spending time looking after and interacting with Yuki. I arranged his belonging when coming to scanning while doing many experiments on the cyanotype of Yuki’s photography. I have also researched around thirty artists to learn about their creation and approaches across both Cyanotype and Scannography art, such as the ways the arrangement of the objects or the ideas of exposure time differ between them.

This project allowed me to learn many different artistic aesthetics viewpoints and gave me an opportunity to capturing Yuki’s footprints and Cyanotype of Yuki’s portrait. Recording my cat without a camera that I have never thought of before. Through working on this project I have developed my hobby and enjoy doing it.

About Yuki

Yuki is a Persian mix breed (Turkish Angora & Persian), a long-haired cat who is good-looking and well behaved. I adopted him from the animal shelter in Abu Dhabi, UAE in 2013, now he is 9 years old. He has pure white fur which reflect on the meaning of his name, Yuki means Snow or Lucky in Japanese origin.

Over the last 7 years we have played, eaten,

slept, travelled together, and we have built up a close and trusting relationship. He is definitely a fantastic and loving companion for me. He has a friendly and understanding personality, who is great with new people, and loves everyone he meets. Besides that, he is also a funny cat who is greedy with foods, especially he likes eating chicken a lot.

Yuki absolutely is a sweetheart cat, because he is very obedient and cooperates with me during the journey of this major project.

  • The process of all the images is Cyanotype and Scannography which were made at different times, but combined together on 7th November 2020. They could be printed out digitally at a later stage.

  • The scale of the images above is the size of the Cyanotype paper and the scann, however the medium of the final work is to still to be confirmed. It could be to the same scale for example and printed on inkjet paper. Nowadays its is possible to make prints at home, or a professional laboratory. For example I could make a pigment print on acid free cotton rage art paper which is archival.
